Democracy: ‘We are at a crossroads’
by Letters editor · The Seattle TimesI’m obsessed with the news! I’m trying to understand what’s happening and what I should do about it.
I find myself repeatedly reminded of two events of my youth. The first was a peaceful celebration — the 1963 March on Washington during which the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream” speech. The second was the 1967 Detroit riots, in which 43 people died. The city has not yet recovered.
We are at a crossroads and the choices that we all face are historic. The old realities are crumbling and the new ones are yet to be constructed. Pay attention! We all need to be well-informed and not passive victims of our own sense of helplessness.
