Monitoring Desk: Afghanistan has become world’s fastest-growing manufacturer of methamphetamine (Ice) but it is still undisputed king of global heroin, the UNODC reports.

According to report, Afghanistan is successfully reshaping the illicit drug markets of neighboring countries into primary transit corridors for regional and global distribution and the landscape of the Afghan drug trade has transformed from agricultural fields to hidden chemical labs, the country has maintained its position as a dominant, highly volatile hub for global narcotics production. Ephedra grows abundantly in Afghanistan and contains ephedrines that can be extracted to make methamphetamine. Although ephedra harvesting for the explicit purpose of methamphetamine manufacture has been documented, precursor chemicals, including cold medication preparations that contain ephedrines, generally offer more straightforward means to make methamphetamine, and analysis of seizures global consignments suggest they are used in illegal methamphetamine manufacture.

The United State Embassy in Islamabad on September 24, 2026 confirmed that U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and the Pakistani Anti-Narcotics Force seized 463 kilograms of Afghan-origin crystal meth worth $21 million bound for Sri Lanka, leading to multiple arrests.

The joint effort highlights how ongoing U.S. training for Pakistani helps dismantle international drug trafficking networks and keeps communities and America more secure. The news of busting these drugs was already reported in media but today US Embassy through its X confirmed that drugs were Afghan origin.

Another report confirmed Afghanistan remains classified as a major global illicit drug producer, though the specific drugs driving this status have radically shifted and Afghan Taliban government is protecting legal cover to drug manufacturing laboratories and importing chemicals needed for manufacturing from different sources after Pak-Afghan transit trade was closed. Now major shipments of chemicals, according to sources are coming through air cargo.

In a recent international drug bust, 671 kilograms of Afghan-origin methamphetamine worth $21 million was jointly seized at ports in Karachi and Colombo by Pakistani, Sri Lankan, and U.S. authorities highlights how active these regional trafficking networks remain.
