The Government of the Republic of Korea has provided a cash donation of US$300,000 to Jamaica to support rebuilding efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The donation was formally announced during a brief handover ceremony on Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Port Royal Street in downtown Kingston.

In addition to the cash assistance, JTS, a Korean non-governmental organization, has donated 200 tonnes of rice to Jamaica, with a focus on assisting the country’s most vulnerable communities. JTS will also provide one container of baby and women’s items.

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea said the contributions reflect the strong ties between the two countries and are intended to support humanitarian relief and recovery efforts following the hurricane, which caused widespread damage across several parishes.

“I have personally witnessed the devastation in western Jamaica and was deeply moved to act. I hope this humble contribution will help as many people as possible return to their normal lives. Our hearts are with Jamaica; Korea stands with Jamaica," said Kim Jin-wook, chargé d’affaires of the embassy
