Rob Reiner's Son Nick Had 'Dark' History With Drug Addiction For Years Before Parents’ Grisly Murders
by Perez Hilton · Perez HiltonPrior to being arrested and charged in connection with his parents’ murders, Nick Reiner had a difficult history with drug addiction.
As the world continues to come to terms with the blood-curdling deaths of favored Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, we’re hearing more about suspected murderer Nick Reiner’s troubled past.
Nearly 10 years ago, Nick opened up about his history with homelessness and drug abuse, which he first went to rehab for at just 15 years old. He told People in 2016:
“I was homeless in Maine. I was homeless in New Jersey. I was homeless in Texas. I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun.”
Why? Because he refused to return to rehab for his ongoing drug addiction issues:
“If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless.”
The now-32-year-old, who penned semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie about his 17 rounds of rehab, told the outlet homelessness was a valuable experience:
“That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff. I met crazy great people there, so out of my element.”
He continued:
“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in LA and being around my family. But there was a lot of dark years there.”
Who would’ve thought that such dark years were ahead, too.
Nick revealed he “could’ve died” while living on the streets at 19:
“It’s all luck. You roll the dice and you hope you make it.”
The same year, Rob opened up to the LA Times about seeing his son struggle:
“It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows. And then making the movie dredged it all up again.”
He went on to claim rehab “works for some people but it can’t work for everybody,” adding:
“When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.”
On Sunday, Rob and Michele were found dead in their home by their 28-year-old daughter Romy. Sources revealed to Perez Hilton exclusively that Nick was involved in their deaths. According to TMZ, the famed couple had their throats slit in a heated argument a family member, but it’s not clear what prompted said argument. In the time since, the family has released a heartbroken statement to Variety:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Our hearts are absolutely shattered for the family. Rest in peace, Rob and Michele.
