The David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) celebrated the four-year stewardship of its pioneer Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Uzoma Maryrose Agwu, on Tuesday as she prepares to hand over on July 2, 2026.

She leaves behind a hospital transformed from an empty structure into a fully operational 450-bed teaching hospital, up from 300 beds.

Dignitaries, including Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by the Deputy Governor, Princess Patricia Obila; Federal Health Ministry Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom; and Committee of CMDs and MDs Chairman, Prof. Sa’ad Ahmed, commended her leadership.

Speakers agreed DUFUTH evolved into a centre of excellence for healthcare, training and research, reducing medical tourism.

Governor Nwifuru praised her for making DUFUTH “a beacon of hope” for Ebonyi State, the South East, and Nigeria.

Prof. Agwu, who was appointed on July 1, 2022, highlighted her achievements: over 7,800 radiological scans, more than 412 complex surgeries, 8,000 vulnerable persons treated through free outreach, one month free dialysis in 2024, cervical cancer screening, and free hydrocele surgeries for children.
