The Greek government is putting doctors’ social media under an AI watch after the death of Giorgos Mazonakis.

The 54-year-old singer, one of the country’s best-known voices and a public philanthropist, died after a heart attack during plasmapheresis at a private clinic. The clinic was not licensed for that procedure. Two doctors have been arrested. The agencies that should have audited such clinics have been under fire since.

“I’m sorry that the system was unable to protect him,” Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said on the day of the funeral.

Anger has widened into a fight over private “longevity” clinics. Investigations have pointed to serious safety gaps. The ministry is preparing a ban on clinics advertising longevity treatments.

On Friday Georgiadis launched Medwatch, an AI platform that will scan doctors’ posts and ads and match them against medical licences.

“Every day, the AI will search every single post by any doctor, allowing us to act immediately and conduct inspections. Therefore, absolutely anything a doctor posts on social media will be audited straight away.”

The two detained doctors had advertised on social media for years. They are held in Athens in segregated cells. The ministry says first Medwatch runs already flag more than 25 units and practices for immediate inspection.

A separate app will let patients check a clinic’s licence before they go in, and file a complaint.
