New details surrounding the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis have raised further questions about what happened at the Karneadou clinic, including why a defibrillator reportedly had no working battery when medical staff desperately tried to activate it.

According to a report by ERTnews, the defibrillator had been purchased by the clinic in July 2022 but was allegedly left unused in its box for approximately four years without a battery installed.

The businessman who supplied the machine, G. Adamopoulos, said he received a phone call at around 4:26pm on September 9, the day Mazonakis died.

He said a nurse initially contacted him about a problem with the device before he heard the voice of doctor Ioanna Gaka.

According to Adamopoulos, he asked whether the machine had been switched on.

He said he was told: “We have pressed On, but it is not working.”

When he asked whether the defibrillator had a battery, he was allegedly told that one was being inserted at that moment.

Adamopoulos said he was surprised to learn that the battery had apparently been left out of the machine since it was purchased.

He also said the clinic staff did not initially tell him that a patient was involved.

The businessman told SKAI that he sensed tension during the telephone conversation and later heard a male voice thanking him.

Family lawyer alleges potential criminal responsibility

The new account has prompted a strong response from the lawyer representing Mazonakis’ family, Charalambos Lykoudis.

Lykoudis argued that the circumstances surrounding the defibrillator could have serious legal implications and questioned whether having a functioning device immediately available might have changed the outcome.

His comments constitute an allegation regarding possible responsibility and will ultimately be assessed by investigators and the courts.

The circumstances surrounding the clinic’s emergency response are now expected to form part of the wider investigation into Mazonakis’ death.

Mazonakis reportedly sought reassurance one day before his death

Further testimony has also emerged concerning Mazonakis’ state of mind and his questions about the medical procedure he was due to undergo.

Hypnotherapist Nasos Komnianos told SKAI that he met Mazonakis one day before his death.

According to Komnianos, the singer told him he wanted to make changes to his lifestyle and asked for help.

Komnianos said Mazonakis was also seeking information about the plasmapheresis procedure he was due to undergo at the clinic the following day.

They allegedly contacted the doctor by telephone during the meeting.

According to Komnianos, the doctor reassured Mazonakis that the procedure was safe and could contribute to detoxification and his wellbeing. He also said the doctor discussed the cost of the treatment during the call.

The testimony adds another layer to the investigation into the events leading up to Mazonakis’ death.

Toxicology and phone records could provide further answers

Investigators are now awaiting additional evidence, including toxicology and other forensic findings.

Authorities are also examining telephone records involving people connected to the case, with the lifting of telephone secrecy potentially providing further information about communications before and during the critical period.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations made by witnesses and the family’s legal representatives have not been established in court.
