Mazonakis’ Sister Demands Justice Over Singer’s Death: ‘I Can’t Believe They Ignored the Machine’s Warnings’

The sister of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis has called for exemplary punishment over his death, saying she cannot understand how warnings from the medical equipment were allegedly ignored.

Maria Mazonaki spoke publicly on Tuesday, September 15, one day after her brother’s funeral, as authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Speaking on the television programme Live News, Maria said the family was seeking justice for what she described as the singer’s unjust death.

“We are asking for exemplary punishment for the unjust loss of our child. Nothing else,” she said.

Maria also referred to information that has emerged from the investigation into Mazonakis’ final moments.

“I watched it and they had the indications on the machine and chose to ignore them. I watched it and my mind can’t handle it,” she said.

Authorities have upgraded the legal charges being examined in connection with the case involving the doctors who were treating Mazonakis.

Maria said she did not know the doctors involved and had no prior knowledge of the clinic where her brother had gone for treatment.

“I don’t know anything about these doctors,” she said.

‘Keep his memory alive’

Maria also addressed the thousands of people who gathered in the streets of Nikaia to mourn Mazonakis before and during his funeral.

Her message to his fans was simple: keep his memory alive.

“What I want to say to the people who went out into the streets is to keep his memory alive forever. That is all,” she said.

Mazonakis died on September 9 at the age of 54 after being taken to Elpis Hospital from the Stem Cell clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki.

He had attended the private clinic for a scheduled plasmapheresis treatment.

The circumstances surrounding his final hours are now the subject of a criminal investigation, with authorities examining what happened during the treatment, the response to his deteriorating condition and the actions of the medical staff.

Investigators are also examining evidence recovered from the mobile phone of doctor Ioanna Gaka, including a photograph reportedly taken while Mazonakis was unconscious and undergoing treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against those involved have not been established by a court.
