Mazonakis death: Kolonaki doctors remanded in custody

Two Kolonaki doctors accused in the death of Giorgos Mazonakis have been remanded in custody.

A prosecutor and an examining magistrate found serious evidence of guilt on a charge of manslaughter with possible intent after plasmapheresis at their clinic. The pair were jailed following marathon defence statements.

They deny any criminal error. They say EKAB ambulance crews arrived without a stretcher, carried the singer downstairs in a chair from the first-floor clinic, and interrupted CPR after cardiac arrest — a break they say protocol forbids.

They told the magistrate two seized plasmapheresis machines were legal and had been declared to the Athens Medical Association in 2025 and 2026. They produced invoices and photographs.

They place the arrest at 4:15 p.m. and the ambulance call at 4:21 p.m.

Ioanna Gaka said a photo of Mazonakis in the office was her usual practice with patients. Elias Theodoropoulos said a patient of his was an eyewitness and had already testified. Both denied ignoring machine alarms, saying the alerts concerned catheter removal.

The charge can carry life imprisonment. The doctors deny the accusations. No verdict has been reached.
