Mazonakis Death: Coroner Reveals New Autopsy Findings About His Heart

New details from the autopsy of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis have emerged, with forensic pathologist Sotiris Bouzianis highlighting findings concerning the condition of his heart and marks found on his upper limbs.

Bouzianis, who is acting as a technical adviser to Mazonakis’ family, discussed the autopsy findings while appearing on the Greek television programme First Coffee with Zina.

‘His heart was like that of a small child’

According to Bouzianis, the autopsy found no macroscopic evidence of a recent heart attack.

He said the singer’s coronary arteries appeared to be in very good condition.

“There was no macroscopic evidence of a recent myocardial infarction,” Bouzianis said, adding that the coronary vessels were “very, very good.”

Describing the anatomical appearance of Mazonakis’ heart, he said it was in particularly good condition.

“Anatomically it was fine. It was like looking at the heart of a small young child,” he said.

Injury and puncture marks found

The forensic pathologist also revealed that an injury was identified on Mazonakis’ forehead during the autopsy.

He also described “scattered puncture wounds” on the singer’s upper limbs.

The marks were located around the elbow area and on the backs of both hands.

However, Bouzianis stressed that he could not determine what caused the marks because emergency medical personnel had intervened before the autopsy.

Myocardial ischemia and pulmonary edema

The autopsy also identified myocardial ischemia and pulmonary edema.

Bouzianis said further testing is required to establish what caused these findings.

Samples were therefore collected for histological and toxicological examinations.

“That’s why we decided to do toxicological and histological tests, to see what was the cause of all this,” he explained.

Toxicology tests expected to provide answers

The toxicological examinations are expected to investigate whether medications, narcotics or other substances were present or had been administered before Mazonakis’ death.

Bouzianis also said additional blood samples had been preserved so that the family could independently arrange further testing at a private laboratory in Greece.

The aim is to obtain additional results as quickly as possible.

The histological and toxicological findings are expected to help forensic specialists determine the cause of the myocardial ischemia and pulmonary edema and establish the precise cause of death.

For now, Bouzianis stressed that the cause of death remains officially undetermined pending the completion of the examinations.
