The global academic community mourns the loss of Ioanna Koutsouradi (known in Turkey as İoanna Kuçuradi), a towering figure in modern ethics, human rights, and philosophy. The world-renowned scholar passed away in Istanbul on Friday, October 2, 2026, just two days before her 90th birthday.
Koutsouradi, a proud daughter of Istanbul’s historic Greek community, dedicated her life to bridging philosophical theory with the practical defence of human dignity.
A Pioneer of Human Rights Philosophy in Turkey
Born in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district on October 4, 1936, Koutsouradi graduated from the elite Zappeion Greek Girls’ School before studying philosophy at Istanbul University. Her academic leadership permanently transformed higher education in Turkey.
In 1968, she founded the Department of Philosophy at Hacettepe University in Ankara, where she taught for decades. Later, she moved to Maltepe University in Istanbul, where she directed its Human Rights Research and Application Centre and held a prestigious UNESCO Chair in Philosophy and Human Rights.
Her groundbreaking books, including Ethics, The Philosophy of Human Rights, and Ethics and World Problems, argued passionately that human rights are not merely political tools, but ethical necessities grounded in human value.
Shaping the Global Philosophical Landscape
Koutsouradi’s influence extended far beyond Turkey and Greece. She served as the president of the Philosophical Society of Turkey and became the first woman to lead the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP).
Her life’s work earned her global recognition, including:
- The UNESCO Aristotle Medal
- Germany’s Großer Verdienstkreuz (Order of Merit)
- Academic awards from institutions worldwide
Following her passing, condolences poured in from universities, philosophical societies, and government officials across Europe, honouring her as an intellectual bridge between nations.
Funeral Held at Şişli Greek Orthodox Cemetery
A major memorial service was held at Maltepe University on Sunday, October 4, 2026, where colleagues, students, and family gathered to pay their respects. Following the university tribute, her funeral service took place at the Şişli Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Istanbul, led by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Koutsouradi leaves behind a monumental legacy that will inspire human rights advocates and thinkers for generations to come.
