Mazonakis Case: Two Doctors in Korydallos Request Phones, Visiting Hours and Televisions

The two doctors remanded in custody over the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis have completed their first 48 hours at Korydallos Prison, as the investigation into the circumstances of his death continues.

Doctors Ioanna Gaka and Elias Theodoropoulos are facing charges of intentional homicide with possible malice by omission. Both deny involvement in the singer’s death.

According to eReportaz, the two defendants are being held separately inside Korydallos under heightened security measures.

Doctors held separately

The 58 year old doctor is reportedly being held in the sixth wing of Korydallos, in a cell designed for two or three inmates. He has been placed separately from the general prison population for security reasons.

According to the report, he has found the conditions of detention difficult and continues to deny any involvement in the case. He has reportedly questioned why he is being held in prison.

After being remanded in custody, he initially said he would begin a hunger and thirst strike, although he reportedly later abandoned the protest.

His wife, Dr Ioanna Gaka, is being held separately in a single cell on the first floor of the women’s wing.

Requests for telephone, visits and television

According to information cited by eReportaz, both doctors have already submitted requests to the prison administration regarding telephone communication and visiting arrangements.

They have also reportedly sought information about when they will be permitted to receive visitors.

Requests are also expected to be submitted for televisions to be installed in their cells.

Meanwhile, investigators are continuing to examine evidence surrounding Mazonakis’ death, including the financial affairs and professional activities of the two defendants.

Financial investigation underway

An investigation into the finances of the two doctors is reportedly being conducted following an order from the head of Greece’s Anti Money Laundering Authority, Charalambos Vourliotis.

The investigation is examining their bank accounts, income and assets, as well as their previous business activities, professional relationships and financial transactions.

Authorities are reportedly seeking to determine whether there are indications of money laundering connected to criminal activity.

If evidence of financial offences emerges, the Anti Money Laundering Authority has the power to freeze assets or accounts and refer relevant findings to prosecutors.

Mazonakis’ home also searched

As part of the wider investigation, authorities have also searched Giorgos Mazonakis’ home in Voula.

According to eReportaz, investigators seized the singer’s safe during the search and are examining how its contents will be assessed.

Authorities are continuing to examine evidence relating to the circumstances of his death, including material from the medical facility where the disputed treatment took place.

Hypnotherapist expected to testify

The next stages of the investigation are also expected to focus on a hypnotherapist who reportedly received one of the photographs allegedly taken by one of the doctors during Mazonakis’ treatment.

The photograph reportedly shows Mazonakis lying on a medical bed with his eyes closed.

According to the report, the singer had a scheduled appointment with the hypnotherapist after his treatment at the clinic on Karneadou Street.

Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances in which the photograph was taken and sent, as well as the communication between the hypnotherapist and the doctor following the treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against the two doctors have not been established in court.
