Giorgos Mazonakis’s death: Accused doctors questioned as police cite unusual custody behavior

Two doctors accused in the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis gave lengthy statements to an examining magistrate on Monday as they face a charge of manslaughter with possible intent.

Police sources told Star News that the female doctor’s behavior in custody before the hearing surprised officers at a Security Sub-Directorate. She allegedly asked if she could order food to the holding room, go outside for a walk, shower, and change clothes, and whether that room was her cell. The second accused, a male doctor, sat silent with his head down, the same report said.

Her testimony lasted more than six hours. She told the magistrate that everything that took place was legal. Reporting by Tassoula Papanikolaou said evidence cited by the Medical Association appears to contradict that claim.

The male doctor is expected to argue that he did not know what was happening in his wife’s office before 4 p.m. He says he was away from the clinic, returned, and was examining a patient when he was called to give first aid. He has put forward three witnesses he describes as eyewitnesses. Two of them had already testified on Monday morning.

An office employee said in an earlier statement that the male doctor “was going in and out of the female doctor’s office, but they always kept the door closed.”

Both accused know they could be remanded. The charge carries a possible sentence of up to life in prison.

The doctors deny criminal responsibility. No court has issued a verdict.
