Mazonakis died after clot alert 10 minutes into unlicensed plasmapheresis, probe finds

Mazonakis, 54, collapsed during the procedure on 9 September at the Stem Cell practice on Karneadou Street. He was later pronounced dead at Elpis Hospital after being taken there without a pulse.

According to reporting by Mega cited in the case file, the machine started at 14:14. Around 14:23–14:24 it logged a first alert consistent with possible clotting. More alerts followed. The device kept running until about 14:56.

Investigators say standard practice in a thrombosis event is to disconnect the patient at once and begin emergency measures. That did not happen. Mazonakis stayed on the machine for the full recorded 42-minute run.

A photograph recovered from the treating doctor’s phone, taken at 14:45 while the machine was still on, shows him unconscious in the treatment chair. The image was sent to her husband. Emergency services were not called until about 16:21 — more than an hour after the machine stopped.

Police forensics recovered a deleted video and two photos from the doctor’s mobile showing Mazonakis in what sources describe as a severely deteriorated state during the session. The files were deleted shortly before she went to Kypseli police station. Officers restored them. The inquiry now rests on the machine log and that recovered digital material.

The two doctors who ran the clinic have been arrested on felony charges of causing death by exposing another person to danger. Mazonakis’s family has asked prosecutors to upgrade the case to homicide with possible intent.

The Athens Medical Association says the practice was not licensed to perform plasmapheresis. Inspectors later found a centrifuge previously ordered removed, hidden in a cupboard, plus a newer machine on site. Patients were not given the required cardiac screening before the procedure, the association has said.

The doctors are due to give further testimony as the investigation continues.
