Mazonakis death: Doctor threatens hunger strike as both doctors are jailed over homicide charge

A doctor accused over the death of Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis reportedly threatened to go on hunger strike after learning that he would be remanded in custody.

The dramatic development came after an overnight marathon questioning of the doctor and his wife over the death of Mazonakis, who collapsed during a plasmapheresis procedure at their private clinic in Kolonaki.

The couple were ultimately ordered into pretrial detention after the investigating judge and prosecutor agreed that they should be held on a charge of intentional homicide with possible malice by omission.

The decision marks a major escalation in the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

Doctor reportedly threatens hunger strike

According to reports by Athens Voice and Mega, the 58 year old doctor reacted strongly when he was told that he would be remanded in custody.

He reportedly declared that he would begin a hunger strike in protest.

The development followed approximately 18 hours of proceedings before the investigating authorities, with the doctors maintaining that they had done nothing wrong.

The couple have denied the allegations and rejected claims that they foresaw a fatal outcome and accepted the possibility that Mazonakis could die.

Doctor’s wife collapses outside investigator’s office

The proceedings were also interrupted when the doctor’s wife reportedly became unwell and showed signs of fainting.

Police officers reportedly helped her onto a sofa outside the investigating office, while her husband interrupted his statement to attend to her.

Later, shortly before 11:30pm, an ambulance arrived at the courthouse.

According to the reports, the 56 year old doctor was lying on the ground and crying and refused medical assistance from paramedics.

The rescuers reportedly left after determining that there was no immediate medical emergency.

The doctor subsequently returned to the investigator’s office after his wife appeared to recover.

Defence points to EKAB response

The doctors’ defence has disputed responsibility for Mazonakis’ death and reportedly sought to place part of the focus on the emergency response.

According to their account, the ambulance arrived at the Kolonaki clinic without a stretcher and with a chair instead.

The defence reportedly argues that CPR was interrupted while Mazonakis was being moved from the first floor to the ambulance, potentially affecting the chances of resuscitation.

The claim will now be examined alongside the wider evidence gathered by investigators.

Dispute over plasmapheresis machines

The doctors have also reportedly insisted that the two plasmapheresis machines seized from the clinic were completely legal.

They allegedly told the investigating authorities that they had purchase invoices and had been declared to the Athens Medical Association in 2025 and 2026, with photographs provided as supporting documentation.

Evidence concerning alarms from the machine has also become part of the investigation.

One of the defendants reportedly claimed that the alarms did not indicate a critical malfunction but were caused by simple vessel ruptures when an intravenous catheter was removed.

What investigators are examining

The investigation is examining the chain of events surrounding Mazonakis’ collapse, the treatment he received, the operation of the plasmapheresis equipment and the response after he became critically unwell.

Authorities are also examining evidence gathered from the clinic and the doctors’ electronic devices as they attempt to establish a precise timeline.

The doctors maintain their innocence and dispute the prosecution’s allegations.

The case remains under judicial investigation, and the allegations against the defendants have not been established by a final court ruling.

Giorgos Mazonakis died last week after collapsing during a medical procedure at the Kolonaki clinic. His death has since triggered a major investigation into the circumstances surrounding his final hours.
