Death Toll During New York City Cold Snap Rises to 13
The people who died, at least several of whom were believed to be homeless, had been found outdoors, including at a playground and near a hospital.
by https://www.nytimes.com/by/mihir-zaveri · NY TimesThe death toll during New York City’s winter storm and stretch of frigid temperatures grew to 13, officials said on Friday, as the city braced for a second straight weekend of severely cold weather.
The number of deaths had held at 10 over the past several days, after multiple of inches of snow blanketed the city last weekend and kicked off an extended period of subfreezing temperatures. The city and nonprofit groups grew particularly worried about the effect on New York City’s homeless population, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced earlier this week that the city was stepping up its efforts to get those people inside.
