Photos of Gateshead flooding clean-up with 'incredibly difficult repair' to come
by Owen Younger · ChronicleLiveTake a look at a series of photos of the clean-up operation from the flooding in Gateshead, with an "incredibly difficult repair" still to come. Northumbrian Water has issued an update on the situation today, with several road closures still in place to facilitate the use of heavy machinery.
Gateshead Council and Northumbria Police are supporting the water company, after traffic was disrupted on the day of the Great North Run. In a statement this morning, Northumbrian Water has apologised to customers for this, and has provided more information on the next steps.
A spokesperson for Northumbrian Water said: "Following a heavy burst on a large water main near Askew Road yesterday (SUN), a number of roadworks are still in place across the area.
"Due to the size of the burst, and the location of it on the grass verge, a lot of soil and debris had washed down onto Askew Road, and we have been working closely with Gateshead Council to clear this as quickly as possible.
"We anticipated that this would be fully reopened last night, however some closures have had to remain in place. This is expected to be an incredibly difficult repair, and our teams are currently working on making the area safe before work can begin.
"In order to do this, some heavy machinery will be working in the area over the next few days, and we have communicated with residents to make them aware. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience and thank customers for their patience."
