Latest forecast as North East set for day of heavy rain in stormy end to September

Non-stop downpours are expected for seven to eight hours across the region today including in Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham

by · ChronicleLive

The North East will be hit by more downpours today (September 30) following a stormy week last week, with heavy rain forecast all day across the region.

As September comes to an end today, outbreaks of rain are expected to become more persistent by the afternoon, particularly in the south of the region, following a cloudy and windy start. This is also the case for much of the UK, with weather warnings in force for rainfall across the Midlands as the downpours are anticipated to lead to some flooding and disruption.

While the North East will escape the worst of the inclement weather today, it will nonetheless be a day for umbrellas and big coats if you are heading out with heavy rain forecast in Newcastle for a solid seven hours between midday and 7pm. This is also the case for Gateshead, Sunderland and Durham - here's what the latest Met Office forecast looks like hour-by-hour:

Rain is expected to ease off during the evening, although it will remain windy along the coast as clear spells develop with highs of 8°C overnight. Looking ahead to Tuesday, October will get off to a blustery start with strong winds forecast alongside the odd shower, although there will be some brighter or sunny spells to look forward too.

The early outlook for the rest of the week across the North East predicts that any residual showers will ease on Wednesday, giving way to drier and sunnier conditions with light winds. It will start to feel chillier overnight, with some frost and mist or fog patches developing, the Met Office said.
