With the number of young mouth cancer patients growing, and many having no explanation as to why they might even be at risk for the illness, Dr Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care warned that there are a number symptoms that people may not be paying attention to. He highlighted seven various symptoms that could be early warning signs

Thickness in the throat

The expert described this sensation as “a persistent feeling of something in their throat” which can include a different feeling when you swallow or persistent throat discomfort and noted that many people don’t immediately associate this with potential long-term health issues. He warned: “This can be an early warning sign of mouth cancer. It's crucial to listen to your body.”

Vocal changes or hoarseness

This common symptom of colds and flus can point to something far greater if patients notice ongoing changes, particularly if they have trouble speaking loudly or clearly. The expert urged people experiencing this to get a professional evaluation.

Swollen lymph nodes

Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck, can be an indicator of a number of health issues. The doctor warned: “If you notice swelling or a lump in your neck that persists or grows, it's essential to seek medical attention promptly. Early detection can significantly impact the success of treatment."

Difficulty chewing, swallowing or speaking

This symptom often sees people getting professional opinions because it can disrupt their daily lives. Dr Hamid particularly cautioned anyone who has been experiencing persistent or worsening difficulties to consult a healthcare professional.

Pain in ears and headaches

The expert shared: "While ear pain and headaches can be attributed to various causes, their persistent or unusual occurrence warrants attention, especially when accompanied by other symptoms of mouth cancer. It's important to connect these dots and discuss them with your dentist or doctor."

Numbness in your mouth

Numbness or unusual sensations in the mouth, lips or tongue can be coupled with discolouration, an incredibly serious warning sign of mouth cancer. Dr Hamid urged: “These are not normal changes, and they should not be ignored. A healthcare provider can help determine the cause and necessary next steps."

Loose teeth without dental problems

Quite literally one of the most common nightmares, if a person finds their teeth or loose without any clear reason, it can be a sign of a number of types of oral cancer. Dr Hamid warned: “If you're experiencing this alongside other symptoms, it could be a sign of something more serious, such as oral cancer. It's crucial to report these changes to your dentist or a healthcare professional as soon as possible."
