Celina Jaitly Battled Depression After Son's Death, Estranged Husband Peter Haag Left Job For Her

Celina Jaitly is currently going through a deeply emotional phase. September has been the toughest month for the actress to navigate since 2017 as her son, Shamsher passed away on September 11, 2017, just 24 hours after his birth. Shamsher was one of her younger twins, born alongside his brother, Arthur; however, the former couldn't survive due to a congenital heart condition.

Recently, Celina took to social media to post an archival video of herself visiting her late son's grave in Austria and expressing her grief. Shortly after Shamsher's death, Celina fell into depression, unable to deal with the heartbreak. At that time, her now-estranged husband, Peter Haag went to great lengths to help her through it. He left his job and even moved places for her.

Peter Haag left his job and moved to Austria to help Celina Jaitly deal with her depression

Actress Celina Jaitly lived in Dubai with her Austrian hotelier estranged husband, Peter Haag and their children. However, the death of her son, Shamsher, which came amid the loss of her parents, made the couple move. Celina was unable to bear the back-to-back heartaches, and she spiralled into a deep depression in 2020.

At that time, Peter Haag became her biggest support system, ready to do whatever it takes to help improve his estranged wife's mental state. He took some big steps for Celina, including leaving his job and deciding to move back to their Alpine estate in Austria for a change of environment. He felt that it could divert her mind and help her get her life back to normal.

After Celina battled depression and defeated it, she opened up about how much Peter's support meant to her at that time. She was grateful that he went out of his way to care for her. Sharing how he had been an important part of her journey towards healing and normalcy, she stated:

"Peter left his job because I was suffering from such severe depression that we had no option but to leave Dubai. He said: 'let's go back to Austria and let us disconnect from everything till you get better. That really helped me, and getting my husband's support in this meant a lot. In a way, Season's Greeting played an important part in healing me and making me feel better."

During an interview with Pinkvilla, Celina shared that Peter, at that time, was "the Chief Commercial Officer of one of the leading organisations in the world"; however, he didn't think twice before resigning for Celina, and after doctors advised them to take "a complete change in the fresh mountain air", if she wanted to get out of her depression. Celina Jaitly further stated, "I honestly did not realise the sacrifice he was making for me because I was very low at that time."

However, Celina knew that whatever Peter was doing for her was out of his love for her. "To be taken care of and be loved anyhow is something that I experienced during this entire phase" of healing, she stated. Sadly, even an enduring relationship like theirs couldn't stand the test of time, and as of 2026, they are currently involved in a highly publicised divorce and custody battle.

Peter Haag allegedly abused Celina Jaitly and tried to control her finances

In late 2025, during their divorce proceedings, Celina's lawyer alleged that Peter was abusive towards her right from the beginning of their spousal life. Amid all the physical and mental turmoil stemming from the abuse, Celina suffered several other setbacks, including the deaths of her parents and her son, Shamsher. Later, when she wanted to rebuild her life by making a comeback in the film industry, he reportedly prohibited her.

In her domestic abuse case plea, Celina alleged that Peter systematically took control of her professional and financial life and blocked her access to her own funds and documents, making her financially dependent on him. During a vulnerable period after losing a newborn child and her parents, she claims Peter pressured her into transferring ownership of her Mumbai residence to him.
