Embrace Low Sulphur Fuels, CNGs – FG To Citizens
by Udeze Ekene · Naija NewsThe federal government has said low sulphur fuel and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) would help to protect the environment.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, stated this while inaugurating the Inter-Agency Committee on Fuels to promote the use of low sulphur fuel and Compressed Natural Gas in the country, in Abuja
He assured the government would continue to sensitize citizens of the potentials of low sulphur fuel and Compressed Natural Gas in the country.
Lawal noted that the use of cleaner fuel would significantly reduce air pollution and human health challenges caused by high sulphur in petroleum products.
He added that high sulphur concentrations in fuel contribute to the rise in extreme weather, dirty air and other effects of climate change, leading to collaborative action towards ensuring a cleaner fuel, environment and improved public health for our generation.
“High sulphur fuels have been linked to rising cases of asthma attacks, acute and chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive lung diseases and many other ailments,” Lawal said.
He further stated that the reviewed Nigeria Industrial Standards for sulphur concentration in petrol, diesel and kerosene was made possible by the mandate of the Ministry and support from the critical stakeholders.
Also in her opening remark, the Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Bahijjatu Abubakar, thanked the “committee members for accepting to serve in order to support the Ministry in its bid to achieve clean air and healthy environment.”
