Environmental groups launch cherry blossom conservation campaign in Taunggyi
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdEnvironmental conservation groups have launched a “Cherry Campaign” to protect cherry trees and cherry blossoms in Taunggyi Township, according to local sources.
The campaign was initiated as cherry trees in the area have begun to bloom during the coldest period of the winter season. Organizers are urging the public not to pick or damage cherry blossoms in order to preserve their natural beauty.
Cherry blossoms, which typically bloom between late December and January, have declined significantly in Taunggyi over the past decade due to deforestation and human activities such as picking and breaking branches, environmental groups said. The Cherry Campaign aims to raise awareness and protect the remaining trees.
“Cherry trees and pine trees are classified as protected tree species. That is why we are organizing this Cherry Campaign to encourage everyone to work together to conserve them,” said Nan Yati San, one of the campaign organizers.
As part of the campaign, vinyl posters bearing messages such as “Do Not Pick Cherry Blossoms” and “Protect Natural Beauty by Not Picking Flowers” have been placed around cherry tree areas on the hills. The messages are also being widely shared on social media platforms to reach a broader audience.
Cherry trees have been damaged as tourists pick flowers or break branches for personal use or souvenirs. In addition, some people reportedly cut branches to sell cherry blossoms in markets, claiming they are for religious offerings, contributing to the destruction of native cherry trees.
In the winter season of December 2025, cherry trees have begun blooming in cold-weather areas. Large numbers of visitors from nearby and distant areas are flocking to view the blossoms around Shwe Phone Pwint Hill and Mya Sein Taung in Taunggyi, sources said.
Cherry blossoms are also beautifully in bloom at well-known locations such as Thein Gyi Cave Cherry Grove near Bawsaing and Kyauktan in the Pa-O Self-Administered Region, attracting visitors and gaining popularity as scenic destinations.
