Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora says more than 1 million people have received their flu vaccine ahead of winter.

Health NZ director for prevention immunisations Nikki Canter-Burgoyne said surpassing that number was a "fantastic achievement and milestone".

It demonstrated a strong commitment of people to protect themselves, their families, and the wider community from the flu, she said.

But she warned winter was just getting started and that the flu could still have a serious impact, especially for those most at risk.

"While for many people influenza can be a mild illness, for some people it can cause serious illness and hospitalisation. The protection that the flu vaccine provides reduces the risk of complications."

The flu vaccine reduced the risk of complications, Canter-Burgoyne said.

Health NZ encouraged people to check they were up to date with other recommended immunisations, including Covid-19, pertussis (whooping cough) and measles.

Flu vaccinations were available through GPs, pharmacies, and other providers across the country - including many midwives.
