University of Newcastle vice-chancellor Alex Zelinsky announces retirement

Chancellor Patricia Forsythe told staff on Wednesday morning that Professor Zelinsky would retire from his position in February 2027.
"It has been a privilege to work with Vice-Chancellor Zelinsky - someone completely committed to students, staff and the communities we serve," Ms Forsythe said.
Professor Zelinsky was the University of Newcastle's eighth vice-chancellor after taking up the role in November 2018.
In 2024, the Newcastle Herald reported that Professor Zelinsky's contract had been extended to 2028.
He said it had been a privilege to lead the university through a period of significant transformation, growth and achievement.
"It has been an enormous honour to lead the University of Newcastle and the communities we serve," Professor Zelinsky said.
"There is still much to achieve over the coming months, and I look forward to working with our students, staff, alumni, partners and supporters as we continue to build on the University's strong foundations," he said.
Ms Forsythe said the University Council would soon begin the formal process to find the next vice-chancellor and president.
