HECO replaces suspended utility pole in Kaimuki

Hawaiian Electric crews were working to restore a downed utility pole near the intersection of Waialae and 16th avenues today in Kaimuki.

Hawaiian Electric crews replaced a downed utility pole today that was suspended off the ground near the intersection of Waialae and 16th avenues in Kaimuki following a solo motor vehicle crash.

A power outage was reported at 6:58 a.m., affecting 14 customers in Kaimuki and Wilhelmina Rise with an estimated restoration time at 12:30 p.m. today, according to HECO’s Oahu outage map. In an email to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser after noon today, a HECO spokesperson said planting the new utility pole will “take many more hours to complete.” Work to replace the damaged pole was completed about 4 p.m.

At 7:38 a.m. today, police were on the scene where the utility pole was suspended in the air.

In an email to the Star-Advertiser, Honolulu police reported District 7 patrol officers responded to the scene where a 27-year-old man drove a vehicle and struck the HECO utility pole on 16th and Waialae avenues shortly before 6 a.m today. Police told the Star-Advertiser the man was not injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

No other injuries were reported, according to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services.
