Mon Medical College expected to complete by November 2026

MON, NOVEMBER 23: Minister Health & Family Welfare P Paiwang Konyak, along with Commissioner & Secretary H&FW, PD, Department officials, Engineering Wing, district and police administrations, district health committee members, host of officers from DoHFW and Konyak Union, reviewed the ongoing construction of Mon Medical College on Saturday, November 23.
The construction of the second Medical College in Mon has completed 25% of the physical work progress and the college is expected to be completed within its given time-frame, November 2026.
The college will be constructed on 93 acres of land with an estimated cost of Rs. 325 cr (90:10)
The Mon Medical College is a significant project aimed at enhancing healthcare infrastructure and medical education in the region along with NIMSR, Kohima. The medical college will see state-of-the-art infrastructure including a helipad within the campus.
The contractors updated the status of the construction to the Minister and his visiting team. Er. Akang Jamir said the completion time of the college was November 2026 and as per the time schedules and the current physical progress the college should be completed within the given time.
He said the sanctioned cost for the project is Rs. 325 cr (90: 10) and as on today, the State Government has received Rs. 242.5 cr of the Central share. He said financial progress is 10% while physical progress is 25%.
Jamir acknowledged the Konyak Civil Societies, Mon Villagers and the Village Councils for being very supportive ensuring that nothing hinders the ongoing construction.
The foundation stone for the Mon Medical College was laid by Union Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan on February 26, 2021.
Paiwang Konyak inspects Mon DH
Minister Health & Family Welfare P. Paiwang Konyak who, along with his team of officials including Commissioner Secretary H&FW Anoop Kimchi, PD Dr. E Motsuthung Patton, embarked on the first phase State-wide tour starting November 19, which concluded at District Hospital Mon today.
The Minister and his entourage inspected the entire Mon DH hospital complex followed by a closed door meeting with the Hospital Authority.
Earlier at the introductory session, the Minister briefed the audience the purpose of the visit, which he termed as exercise: to check the incomplete projects, judicious use of the revenue generated from CMHIS/Ayushman card, strength of manpower, etc.
Dwelling on the core issue of the Department on shortage of doctors, Konyak said all the Department has engaged two retired specialists and are currently working on modalities. Towards this, the Minister urged the serving specialist doctors and Medical officers to fill the gap till the time recruitment takes place.
The Minister assured his full commitment to address the issues and challenges faced by the DHs and also assured to make all efforts to ensure that the healthcare system in the State is enhanced, making affordable and accessible healthcare to the citizens.
Konyak also urged the Konyak Union, KNSK, KSU, to carry on the inspection initiated by the Food Safety and Drug Control in checking the fish markets and the foreign food being supplied in the district and the pharmacists who employs a person who doesn’t possess notified license and sale of banned drugs.
The Minister viewed that such continuous checks will alert the citizens on consumption of harmful products and medicines and will also strengthen the Department’s effort to achieve its target while also many local youths can get an opportunity to take up entrepreneurship.
Konyak said with Mon Medical College expected to complete within the given time-frame, 2026 more developmental activities can be taken up in Mon DH which will be turned into teaching hospitals of the Mon Medical College.
The Minister also released the Mon DH Quarterly Access report Issue-1.
Officials of the District and police administration, district health management committee, host of senior officers from DoHFW, KU, KNSK and KU were also present at the inspection.
Earlier the Food Safety team and Drug Control team inspected the town checking for supply and sale of illegal products including fish markets and also inspected pharmacies.
