Sotheby’s has officially unveiled The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection, an extraordinary 12-piece group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterworks estimated to realize in the region of $450 million USD. Unseen in public for over half a century, the historic assemblage is headlined by landmark paintings from Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Claude Monet.
Leading the offering is Van Gogh’s Châtaigniers en fleurs (Chestnut Trees in Blossom), painted in May 1890 during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise and estimated in the region of $180 million USD. The canvas depicts a blossoming chestnut canopy and a solitary figure alongside women in Japanese attire, representing one of only eight Auvers landscapes remaining in private hands.
Alongside Van Gogh’s work is Cézanne’s 1888–1890 oil painting Arlequin, estimated in the region of $120 million USD. Depicting the artist’s 17-year-old son Paul in red and black diamond checks, it stands as the only composition from Cézanne’s seminal four-part Harlequin series held outside of a museum collection. Both works are positioned to set new global auction records for the respective artists.
The collection also features Claude Monet’s 1876 landscape Le Jardin des Tuileries, estimated between $15 million and $20 million USD. Painted from a fifth-floor apartment on the Rue de Rivoli, it is one of only two Paris cityscapes from the series remaining in private hands. The 12-piece lineup is completed by masterworks from Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Alfred Sisley, André Derain, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and Maurice de Vlaminck.
The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection goes on sale November 18, 2026, at Sotheby’s New York.
