by Preeja Aravind · India TodayFamily members of a man who died at Kalaignar Super Speciality hospital in Guindy, Chennai, fought with the hospital authorities claiming he died of negligence.
This is the same hospital where a senior oncologist was stabbed by a patient’s son on Wednesday.
An altercation occurred between hospital authorities and the relatives of Vignesh, who was brought to the hospital late on Wednesday evening with stomach ache. Vignesh’s family members said that he died because the doctors didn’t administer proper treatment.
One of Vignesh’s relatives who spoke to India Today said that he didn’t get proper care because there was a doctors’ protest going on in the hospital over Wednesday’s attack against Dr Balaji.
Hospital authorities, however, denied all allegations. They said there was no negligence by doctors and claimed that proper care was given to Vignesh.
According to the hospital, 33-year-old Vignesh was brought to the hospital with acute abdominal pain.
Before being brought to the government hospital, he had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital for his pancreas. According to the government hospital authorities, his pancreas was “fully damaged”.
“Due to heavy drinking, Vignesh’s pancreas was fully affected and both his kidneys were also damaged,” a statement by the hospital read. They also said that Vignesh suffered from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the auto-immune disease caused by hypothyroidism.
The hospital authorities stated that Vignesh’s condition was explained to his family members, and their consent was also taken before treatment.
“When he suffered breathing difficulties early in the wee hours of Friday, he was intubated. At 9.18 am he died without responding to treatment,” the hospital said in a statement.
