Delhi Mayor introduces drone spraying initiative to fight mosquito-borne diseases

Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has launched an initiative to use drones for spraying anti-mosquito chemicals in waterlogged areas of the city. This is the first time drones are being used in Delhi for this purpose.

The drone-based spraying system was inaugurated in the Narela zone, starting in ward number 33, Rani Khera. This initiative aims to combat vector-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya, aligning with ongoing public awareness campaigns to mitigate disease risks.

Oberoi explained the challenges posed by record-breaking rains this year, which have led to significant waterlogging in various parts of the city. She noted that the lack of proper drainage increases the risk of vector-borne diseases and stressed the importance of eliminating water accumulation as a crucial first step in preventing such illnesses.

In the past 2 to 3 months, awareness programs have been held at multiple levels to educate the public on preventing vector-borne diseases. "Municipal Corporation of Delhi is making every effort to protect the citizens from vector-borne diseases by using state-of-the-art technology," the Mayor said.

Oberoi urged residents to be proactive in preventing water accumulation around their homes, particularly in areas like Rani Khera, where inadequate drainage has complicated anti-larva operations.

"There is no drainage facility at some places in Rani Khera ward, and due to record-breaking rains this year, there were a lot of difficulties in doing anti-larva work here," she said.

Noting all these factors, anti-mosquito chemicals are being sprayed in Delhi using drones for the first time. She added that this campaign will be conducted throughout the entire city.
