Delhi University has unveiled a series of ambitious initiatives as part of its Institutional Development Plan (IDP) 2024. These initiatives include launching its satellite, transitioning to an electric vehicle-only policy on campus, and introducing a free student lunch scheme.

The IDP 2024 outlines the university's long-term vision and objectives, detailing the goals DU aims to accomplish over time.

DU SATELLITE AND ELECTRIC VEHICLE-ONLY CAMPUS

Delhi University plans to develop a DU satellite system that could significantly contribute to scientific research, telecommunications, GPS navigation, and remote education as part of its outlined goals. However, if financial constraints occur, the university may explore partnering with organisations like ISRO to bring this vision to life, according to the document.

Further, DU is also focusing on environmental sustainability by aiming for a zero-emission target through the restriction of fossil fuel vehicles on campus. The plan involves gradually introducing electric vehicles, starting with areas like Chhatra Marg, to promote a cleaner and greener environment for students and staff. The specifics and feasibility of these initiatives will be determined as they are considered for implementation.

FREE LUNCH SCHEME AND UNIVERSITY HAAT INITIATIVE

DU is also planning to launch a working lunch scheme for underprivileged students, providing free meals at the university cafeteria in exchange for work. The canteens will adhere to strict food safety standards and may partner with self-help groups for food sourcing and supporting local communities, as outlined in the IDP.

In addition to this, DU aims to create a "University Haat," inspired by international universities, to establish a commercial shopping area. This space would showcase and sell products developed by student-led start-ups. With a campus population of nearly six lakh, the university sees a significant market opportunity, the document notes.

Delhi University's long-term vision also includes the creation of a 'University Alumni Angel Network,' where successful alumni can offer mentorship and financial backing to student-led start-ups.

The plan also proposes reverse internships, allowing students to hire industry professionals and the establishment of special Chairs for multinational companies to foster research aligned with their interests. The Institutional Development Plan was presented to the Academic Council for consideration during their meeting on Thursday.
