World COPD Day 2024: Date, theme, and global challenges
The prevalence of COPD is especially high in low-resource settings, where exposure to risk factors like tobacco smoke and pollution often goes unchecked.
by India Today Information Desk · India TodayWorld COPD Day, observed annually, aims to raise awareness about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Organised by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD), the event brings together health professionals, patient groups, and educators to address the global burden of the disease.
THIS YEAR'S THEME
The 2024 theme, "Know Your Lung Function," emphasises the critical role of spirometry in diagnosing COPD and assessing overall lung health. Spirometry, a simple test to measure lung function, not only helps identify COPD early but also serves as a vital tool in understanding the impact of factors such as air pollution, respiratory infections, and ageing on lung health.
COPD: A GROWING GLOBAL CHALLENGE
COPD is a preventable and treatable condition that leads to breathlessness, chronic cough, and sputum production. Despite being manageable, it remains a significant global health challenge, claiming an estimated three million lives annually. The prevalence of COPD is especially high in low-resource settings, where exposure to risk factors like tobacco smoke and pollution often goes unchecked.
WHEN DID IT START?
First held in 2002, World COPD Day has grown into a major event, with activities spanning more than 50 countries. The initiative not only educates the public but also underscores the importance of early diagnosis and innovative treatments. This year's event on November 20 continues to encourage communities worldwide to prioritise lung health and reduce the burden of COPD.
By shining a spotlight on lung function, World COPD Day 2024 seeks to empower individuals and health systems to take proactive steps in managing and preventing chronic respiratory diseases.
