World Post Day, observed annually on October 9, emphasises the vital role of the postal system in daily life, global communication, and economic growth. This year commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), founded in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland, which revolutionised international mail exchange.

This year’s theme, “150 Years of Enabling Communication and Empowering People Across Nations,” celebrates the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which was established to simplify international mail services and create a unified postal system, facilitating smoother mail exchange between countries.

World Post Day was first declared at the UPU Congress in Tokyo in 1969 to highlight the essential role of postal services globally.

The postal system remains essential for communication, trade, and development, playing a key role in e-commerce, logistics, and financial inclusion.

Over 150 countries celebrate World Post Day with a variety of activities. In some nations, it’s recognised as a working holiday, with postal services remaining operational while special events take place.

Many postal organisations use the day to launch new products and services or honour their employees.

Celebrations often include philatelic exhibitions, the release of commemorative stamps, and unique cancellation marks.

Other events include displaying World Post Day posters, hosting open houses at postal facilities, and organising seminars and workshops.

Some postal services also offer special souvenirs, such as T-shirts and badges, to mark the occasion.
