  • A new travel advisory outlines important travel requirements

Nothing gets us Indians more excited than spotting "visa-free entry" while planning an international trip. Agree?

While Indian travellers typically need an e-visa or visa on arrival to enter Vietnam, Phu Quoc Island offers a visa-free entry option. However, the Embassy of India in Vietnam has issued a new advisory urging travellers to stay cautious about two key concerns: the specific visa rules for Phu Quoc and the risks associated with losing passports during the trip.

As per the advisory, the visa exemption is strictly limited to travel to and stay within Phu Quoc Island. It does not allow entry into mainland Vietnam. So, if you plan to explore beyond the island during your trip, you will need to apply for a valid visa in advance.

Sometimes, things don't go as planned. Medical emergencies or flight disruptions may force travellers to head to mainland Vietnam, including cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. In such cases, Indian nationals without a valid visa for mainland Vietnam can face serious issues, from delays in getting medical help to travel restrictions and immigration hassles.

Because of this, Indian travellers are advised to get the appropriate Vietnam visa before heading to Phu Quoc Island, even if their plan is to stay only on the island. If you still choose to travel without one and need to go to the mainland due to an emergency, be prepared for possible immigration complications.

The advisory also highlights another concern: the loss of passports. There have been several cases where Indian travellers have misplaced their passports in Vietnam. If this happens, you must immediately file a police complaint in the area where it was lost and submit it to the Embassy of India in Hanoi or the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City.

While the embassy tries to issue an Emergency Certificate or travel document on the same day, exiting Vietnam isn't immediate. It usually takes 3–5 working days for local authorities to issue an exit permit, and in some cases, even longer. Until then, you'll need to stay in Vietnam.

Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam has been offering visa-free entry to international tourists, including Indians, for a while now. Indian citizens can stay on the island for up to 30 days without a visa. However, this is a fresh advisory aimed at making travellers more aware and cautious before planning their trip.

So, it's always better to plan ahead and stay prepared. It can make all the difference in keeping your trip smooth and hassle-free.
