Balugaon: A record number of birds have visited the Chilika Lake of Odisha this year. Over 11 lakh birds, representing 196 species, have arrived from India and abroad.

This is an increase of 4,972 birds compared to last year. Of these, 11,10,257 are foreign birds from 106 species, bringing cheer to environmentalists.

Interestingly, two new species have been spotted in Chilika – the Plain Martin and the Bengal Bush Lark. The Northern Pintail species leads the count with 2,18,993 birds.

The bird census was conducted by 22 teams across 5 Forest Ranges under the Chilika Wildlife Department, involving bird experts, OUAT students, department employees, and 130 CDA personnel. While 19 teams surveyed the water areas, 3 teams covered the land areas.

The arrival of these birds has enriched Chilika’s biodiversity. The Wildlife Department attributes the growing numbers to the famous Lake’s suitable food and safe environment, making it a preferred destination for water birds.
