Bhopal: India’s cheetah population has risen to 60 after Indian-born female cheetah KJP21 gave birth to five healthy cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
Of the 60 cheetahs, 41 have been born in India.
The 32-month-old KJP21 is the third female cheetah born in India to give birth, after Mukhi and KGP12.

The latest births mark another step in the development of the next generation of cheetahs under Project Cheetah.
The cubs also introduce a new genetic lineage from Botswana into India’s cheetah population, as their father is a male cheetah from Botswana.
Nine cheetahs from Botswana were brought to Kuno in February 2025 as part of the ongoing reintroduction programme.
