Farmers distressed as harvested paddy is rotting due to recurring rains in Odisha
by KalingaTV Bureau · KalingaTVBhubaneswar: As the rain continues in Odisha, the farmers are distressed over the harvested paddy lying in the fields. The harvested paddy have started to grow sprouts by getting wet in the rain in the absence of cold storage facilities.
The onset of rain in the harvesting season has become a reason of worry for the farmers. The low-pressure rain is turning a year’s hard work of the farmers into garbage dump as the harvested paddy have started rotting in the fields.
Not only paddy farmers, but also other croppers in the Rabi season are facing the wrath of the unseasonal rains. Some harvested paddy lying in the fields are sprouting, where as some others lying in the mandis are getting rotten. The plight of the farmers due to the rains seems unending.
Due to the continuous rains on December 20 and 21 the harvested paddy has started to rot in the fields. Fearing the paddy to rot eventually some farmers are working hard again to dry these crops. The semi-dried paddy once again got drenched in the rains on December 24 and 25.
On the other hand, the insurance holding farmers are worried if they will get their insured money for the recurring rains. However, Department of Cooperation has said that farmers will get their insurance after the estimation of crop loss is done. A committee will estimate the crop loss and then the farmers will receive their insured amount.
