Numerous women experience menstrual irregularities, a sudden weight increase, acne or unwanted hair growth, which they dismiss as regular hormonal changes. Such symptoms may, however, be initial indications of Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) a common hormone disorder affecting many women worldwide.

In PMOS, ovaries over-produce androgens (male hormones), causing interference with the menstrual cycle and other associated health disorders. Although many signs are noticeable, a majority of women disregard the early warning signals.

Irregular periods

The most prominent and widely occurring symptom of PMOS is irregular periods or absent periods. Women may often miss out on having periods for several months or have heavy bleeding when they do have them.

Acne breakout

Constant breakouts of acne, especially on the face, chest or back could be due to hormonal imbalances caused by PMOS.

Unwanted hair growth

Unwanted hair growth on the face, chin, chest or abdomen are other common ignored symptoms; simultaneously, increased hair loss and thinning of hair are often experienced on the scalp.

Wight gain

A sudden increase in weight or weight maintenance even on a health conscious lifestyle is another crucial sign of PMOS.

Mood swings

Besides the physical factors, mental and emotional well-being is also negatively affected; mood swings, stress, fatigue or depression may be commonly encountered by patients, and yet often explained away as simply due to stress.

Doctors advise all women not to neglect the warning symptoms and to seek medical help as they may be indicators of an underlying condition.

Knowing and recognising these symptoms early would bring about a significant difference in both short-term health and quality of life.
