Second Thessaloniki Clinic Sealed as Families Allege Neglect, Death Linked to Scandal-Hit Chain

Greek authorities have sealed a second private clinic in Thessaloniki, both owned by the same family, as mounting complaints from patients' relatives detailed alleged neglect and overcharging at facilities already under investigation for running an unlicensed oncology department.

Roughly 300 patients remain hospitalized at the original clinic, where National Transparency Authority (EAD) inspectors found an oncology unit had operated without a legal license since 2021.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis acknowledged the complexity of shutting the facility down. "There's a real tangle here. It's not a simple case. There are 300 people we need to figure out how to handle," he told reporters.

EOPYY administrator Athanasios Zamanis has ordered urgent inspections of all clinics owned by the same family, which also operates a private neuropsychiatric clinic in Larissa and a private internal medicine clinic in Lamia.

Among the allegations: one relative said he was charged €12,000 for three to four treatment sessions over a year, covering the doctor's fee, medication and hospital bed. Another said staffing was so inadequate he had to personally feed his hospitalized mother and raised concerns about her medication administration.

A third relative described bringing his mother in for physical therapy, only to be called roughly 20 days later to collect her in critical condition.

He said staff told him she needed hospitalization; medical findings attributed her condition to dehydration.

She died 20 days later. Similar accounts have surfaced in online reviews of the clinic.
