Court dismisses case vs Bayombong bishop, anti-mining advocates
by Ian Laqui · philstarMANILA, Philippines — A local court in Nueva Vizcaya has dismissed the charges against the prelate of the Diocese of Bayombong and several others who were named defendants due to their opposition to a mining exploration project in the province.
In a statement on June 24, Bayombong Bishop Jose Mangalinao said that the case where he and other environmental defenders were named defendants was dismissed.
“Today, we give thanks to God and to all of you. The court has dismissed the case filed against us and our fellow watershed defenders,” Mangalinao said.
“This outcome is not only a legal victory. It is a victory for truth, justice, and the collective efforts of communities who courageously stand to protect our land, water, and future generations,” he added.
The complaint against the prelate and several individuals was filed by a man who identified himself as the overall chieftain of the Bugkalot and Ilongot indigenous community.
The complaint seeks court remedies related to an anti-mining barricade established within ancestral domain areas affected by the exploration project.
Mangalinao, however, said that he harbors no resentment toward anyone.
“We hold no resentment toward anyone. Instead, we move forward with renewed commitment to peaceful advocacy, environmental stewardship, and the protection of the sacred gift of creation,” Mangalinao.
“Let this moment remind us that defending our watersheds, our environment, and our people's livelihood is not a crime—it is a shared moral responsibility,” he added.
