The Tūpuna Maunga Authority is inviting applications for its 2026/2027 Research Scholarship, supporting new research that deepens understanding of the ancestral mountains of Tāmaki Makaurau and contributes to their ongoing protection and care.

Offering up to $20,000, the scholarship is open to researchers across all disciplines whose work aligns with the values and aspirations of the Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains).

Applications open on Monday 29 June 2026 and close at 11.59 pm on Sunday 30 August 2026.

This year introduces an exciting new partnership with Māori Education Trust (MET) that expands support for applicants.

Successful scholarship applications that meet MET criteria will receive joint funding from the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and MET. Applicants that do not meet MET criteria will be funded solely by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

This scholarship is grounded in the Tūpuna Maunga Education Strategy and the principles of the Integrated Management Plan (IMP). It supports research that grows knowledge, encourages innovation, and contributes to the ongoing protection of the mauri (life force) and wairua (spiritual essence) of the Tūpuna Maunga.

Previous recipients have explored diverse areas including ecology, archaeology, photography, weaving, volcanology, anthropology, and cultural narratives. Researchers from all disciplines are encouraged to apply, provided their work aligns with the Authority’s values and strategic direction.

“This scholarship is about supporting research that creates meaningful insight and strengthens the relationship between people and place, says Paul Majurey, Co-Chair of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

Co-Chair Marama Royal adds, “We are particularly excited about the new partnership with the Māori Education Trust, which strengthens support for applicants and helps expand opportunities for research aligned with shared values.”

The scholarship may be awarded to a single applicant or split among multiple recipients depending on the scope and quality of proposals.

Applications are submitted via the SmartyGrants platform, with successful recipients receiving funding from November 2026 (subject to processing timelines).

Full details, including an information pack for applicants, eligibility and the Tūpuna Maunga Values framework, can be found on our website.
