Kahu Carter To Host Christchurch Hui On Clean, Healthy Waterways

by · SCOOP

Green MP and Christchurch Central candidate Kahu Carter will bring the Green Party’s Drink Swim Fish policy to Ōtautahi this Friday, hosting a public hui on what protecting clean and healthy waterways means for Christchurch.

The hui comes in the lead up to World Rivers Day on Sunday, an annual global celebration focused on the importance and protection of rivers.

Carter will be joined by Ngāi Tahu waka champ and former ECAN Chair Craig Pauling for the discussion at Space Academy in central Christchurch.

“World Rivers Day is a reminder of just how precious our waterways are, and here in Christchurch they are quite literally woven through our city,” Carter says.

“Ōtākaro runs through the heart of Christchurch. It’s somewhere people walk beside, cycle beside, paddle on and spend time with their whānau.

“Our rivers should be places where people can swim, gather kai and connect with nature without worrying about pollution or whether the water is safe.

“That’s why I’m really looking forward to bringing people together in Christchurch to talk about what better protection for our water could look like, and to hear directly from locals about what matters to them.”

The Green Party’s Drink Swim Fish policy includes stronger environmental limits for freshwater, lower nitrate limits, stronger rules for wastewater discharges into rivers and coastal waters, and a phase-out of bottom trawling.

“Christchurch has put enormous energy into rebuilding a beautiful, liveable city. Healthy rivers and waterways are an important part of that future too.

“I want our kids and grandkids to inherit waterways that are healthier than the ones we have today.”
