Peace lilies will bloom when watered with one natural item every month

As the weather gets colder, Brits need to change the way they care for their houseplants, including the beloved peace lily, which can be left without flowers if overwatered

Peace lilies, known for their stunning white blooms, should flower throughout the year given sufficient sunlight, warmth and water.

However, many houseplant enthusiasts often forget to adjust their watering habits for peace lilies during autumn, when these plants require less hydration due to the cooler weather.

Matt Slaymaker, a horticulture expert from Lively Root, warns that overwatering can stunt the growth of a peace lily and prevent it from flowering.

He explained: "During the summer, your plant's soil will likely dry out quickly and require more frequent watering."

"In contrast, in winter, the plant's soil tends to lose water at a slower rate, due to excess moisture in the air.", reports the Express.

So, how should you water peace lilies?

Rather than sticking to a strict watering schedule, it's best to check the soil's moisture level weekly by inserting your finger into the potting mix.

Matt advised: "If the soil feels moist, hold off on watering your peace lily for a day or two. Conversely, if the soil feels dry, your plant is thirsty and needs a good drink."

It's crucial to let the soil dry out slightly before watering again, as underwatering can also harm the peace lily.

Matt further noted: "While an overwatered plant will have yellow, wilting leaves, and smelly, soggy soil, an underwatered plant will have droopy leaves and dry soil."

Peace lilies thrive in humid environments and benefit from a regular misting with water every few days. They can also flourish in steamy conditions found in bathrooms and kitchens.

Watch out during the autumn months, however, to avoid placing peace lilies near hot radiators or drafty windows as both extremes can dehydrate the plant, hindering its ability to bloom.

But what else can you do to ensure your peace lily blossoms beautifully during the autumn season?

It might seem odd, but don't bin those banana peelsthey're surprisingly beneficial as a natural fertiliser for peace lilies.

Matt advised: "Flowering plants like peace lilies like banana water. This is because it's rich in potassium, which helps the plant's well-being."

Potassium not only facilitates peace lily flower growth but also promotes robust root development and enhances plant disease resistance.

Simply put a banana peel into a jar, fill it with water, and let it steep for a couple of days.

After separating the peel, drench the soil with the infused water, providing your peace lily with a nutrient surge that encourages bigger, healthier blooms.

Remember, one banana peel per plant is enough and this potassium-rich concoction should only be used once a month to prevent overfertilisation or potential mould on the plant.
