IWT to remain in abeyance until Pak ends support to terrorism: India
by Northlines · NorthlinesNew Delhi, Mar 20: India has said the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will remain in abeyance until Islamabad stops supporting terrorism.
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, P. Harish, stated that Pakistan must respect the sanctity of human life before raising concerns over the treaty, describing it as a global epicentre of terror. He said India had signed the 1960 treaty in good faith, but Pakistan undermined its spirit through wars and continued terror attacks.
India suspended the treaty following last year’s Pahalgam attack, he added.
Harish also noted that India had sought discussions on modifying the treaty in view of technological advancements and environmental changes, but Pakistan rejected the proposal.
Speaking at a UN event marking World Water Day, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to ensuring access to safe and clean drinking water, highlighting achievements under the Jal Jeevan Mission. (Agencies)
