Timely Talks Avert Crisis

It is truly a welcome step that the government and the medical interns have resolved the stipend hike issue, leading the latter to call off their strike. It is pertinent to mention that neither party claimed the stipend increase demand was unreasonable.

The medical interns are the significant part of the healthcare sector in J&K and their dedication and support to provide medical facilities to the people are unquestionable. Therefore, their concerns deserve to be heard and considered sympathetically.

At the same time, the government’s response to the issue is also commendable. Instead of allowing the situation to continue, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Masood Itoo met the interns’ representatives, patiently heard their concerns, and assured them their demand would receive a final decision within 30 days.

The way the issue has been resolved shows the maturity of J&K Government because if the matter was handled wrongly things could have gone out of hands. This could have created more problems for those helming the affairs of the Health Department as interns act as the backbone of the healthcare sector and their long term annoyance could have created a chaotic situation in J&K.

The government’s approach shows the importance of dialogue in resolving genuine grievances. The interns were not simply asked to end their protest; they received a clear assurance that their demand for a stipend enhancement was under consideration and would be decided based on the recommendations of the constituted committee.

This assurance helped build trust between the two sides. Keeping the government’s commitment in view, the interns decided to withdraw their strike and resume their duties in the larger interest of patients and hospitals.

This is a positive example of handling a difficult situation through communication rather than confrontation. A strike by medical interns can affect hospital work and, ultimately, patient care.

The government’s decision to engage directly with the interns and give a definite time frame for resolving the matter has helped prevent further disruption. At the same time, the interns have also shown responsibility by accepting the assurance and returning to their duties.

The real test, however, will now be the timely fulfillment of the assurance. A genuine assurance carries value only when it is followed by action. If the interns’ legitimate demand is addressed within the promised period, it will strengthen their confidence in the administration and also set a healthy example for resolving similar issues in the future.
