Salal Dam Spillway Gates Opened as Heavy Rain Raises Chenab Inflow
by Northlines · NorthlinesReasi, July 9: Authorities on Thursday opened multiple spillway gates of the Salal Dam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district following a sharp rise in water inflow caused by heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
Officials said the spillway gates were opened to regulate the increasing reservoir level and ensure the safe discharge of excess water into the Chenab River.
The surge in inflow has been attributed to widespread rainfall in the dam’s catchment over the past several days, resulting in a significant rise in the reservoir’s water level.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and urged residents living along the banks of the Chenab River to remain vigilant as water discharge from the dam is expected to increase.
People have been advised to stay away from the river and avoid venturing into low-lying areas near the Chenab as a precautionary measure.
Officials said the release of water through the spillway gates is part of the standard reservoir management protocol aimed at maintaining the structural safety of the dam during periods of high inflow. (Agencies)
