Cooling the Earth, Awakening the Soul

“Om Dyauh Shaantih Antarikssam Shaantih Prthivii Shaantih” may be understood as a profound ecological aspiration: may peace prevail in the heavens, atmosphere and Earth. Here, shanti is not merely the absence of conflict; it signifies balance, harmony and ecological equilibrium.
The contemporary environmental crisis is not merely a technological challenge but a profound civilisational question concerning humanity’s relationship with Nature. The remarkable success of the Montreal Protocol demonstrates that science-based international cooperation can reverse planetary degradation, while the Kigali Amendment of 2016 extends this achievement into climate-conscious cooling by phasing down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning.
World Ozone Day 2026
Every September 16, the world observes the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, popularly known as World Ozone Day. The observance recalls the adoption of the Montreal Protocol in 1987 and seeks to strengthen global efforts to protect the stratospheric ozone layer—the planet’s nearly invisible but indispensable shield against harmful ultraviolet radiation.
World Ozone Day 2026 carries particular significance with the theme “Global action for a cooler planet – Celebrating 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.” The theme marks a decade since the Kigali Amendment was adopted in October 2016 and highlights the close relationship between ozone protection, climate mitigation and sustainable cooling.
The occasion therefore goes beyond environmental commemoration. It invites humanity to rethink its relationship with technology, consumption and Nature—from exploitation to stewardship, excess to equilibrium, and material convenience to conscious sustainability.
The Atharva Veda declares:
“Mātā bhūmiḥ putro’haṃ pṛthivyāḥ” — “The Earth is my mother, and I am her son.”
This ancient ecological consciousness resonates with today’s environmental imperative: the Earth is not merely a resource but a shared inheritance and a sacred responsibility.
Montreal Protocol: A Global Success
The ozone crisis demonstrated that environmental damage need not be irreversible when science, political will, international cooperation and financial solidarity come together.
Adopted in 1987 and entering into force in 1989, the Montreal Protocol created a global framework for phasing out ozone-depleting substances. Its implementation has contributed to the projected recovery of the ozone layer around the middle of this century, provided countries maintain their commitments.
Its significance extends beyond atmospheric chemistry. The Protocol has become an important example of multilateral environmental governance, showing that nations with different economic capacities and geopolitical interests can work together for a planetary common good.
The ozone story offers a valuable civilisational lesson: when knowledge becomes wisdom and wisdom becomes collective action, humanity can repair damage that once appeared insurmountable.
Kigali Amendment and Sustainable Cooling
The Kigali Amendment, adopted in Rwanda in October 2016, expanded the Montreal Protocol’s climate significance by establishing a global pathway to phase down HFCs—powerful greenhouse gases widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning after earlier ozone-depleting substances were phased out.
A decade later, the Kigali framework represents an important bridge between ozone diplomacy and climate action. More than 170 countries had ratified the Amendment by February 2026, demonstrating its expanding global reach.
However, the challenge is larger than simply replacing one refrigerant with another. The world must redesign the wider cooling ecosystem, including energy efficiency, building design, cold chains, refrigeration infrastructure, urban planning and consumer behaviour.
Sustainable cooling is therefore not simply an engineering issue. It is also a developmental, ethical and intergenerational responsibility.
The Cooling Paradox
Climate change is increasing the need for cooling while making conventional cooling systems environmentally consequential. Rising temperatures are driving demand for air-conditioning and refrigeration, while inefficient equipment and high-global-warming-potential refrigerants can intensify climate pressures.
This creates a fundamental question: How can humanity cool homes, hospitals, schools, food systems and workplaces without overheating the planet?
The answer lies in a holistic approach that combines low-global-warming-potential refrigerants with energy efficiency, renewable energy, passive architectural design, efficient appliances and responsible consumption.
Sustainable cold chains can also strengthen food security by reducing food loss and waste, demonstrating how ozone and climate policies can generate interconnected social, economic and ecological benefits.
Cooling the Mind
The environmental discussion acquires a deeper philosophical dimension through the Brahma Kumaris perspective. Environmental degradation can also be viewed as an expression of unrestrained human consciousness—greed, excessive consumption, attachment, wastefulness and the relentless pursuit of material comfort.
The Brahma Kumaris philosophy emphasises soul-consciousness, purity, simplicity, self-discipline, non-violence and harmonious coexistence. From this perspective, planetary cooling must be accompanied by an inner cooling of the human mind.
A mind overheated by anger, greed and acquisitiveness can encourage an overheated lifestyle, while a consciousness rooted in peace, moderation and spiritual wisdom can foster greater respect for Nature.
The Bhagavad Gita (6.17) speaks of balance through regulated living:
“Yuktāhāra-Vihārasya Yukta-Cheṣhṭasya Karmasu” — “One who is regulated in eating, recreation and actions attains balance.”
Its ecological equivalent is responsible consumption. The planet does not necessarily demand deprivation; it demands discernment.
From Consumerism to Conscious Consumption
Environmental sustainability cannot depend exclusively on international treaties. It must become part of the everyday consciousness of households, institutions, industries and communities.
A sustainable cooling culture can include choosing energy-efficient equipment, maintaining refrigeration and air-conditioning systems properly, supporting climate-friendly technologies, reducing unnecessary energy use, designing buildings for natural ventilation and thermal efficiency, strengthening sustainable cold chains and integrating renewable energy wherever feasible.
Above all, society can cultivate a culture of need-based consumption rather than greed-based consumption.
Such practices harmonise with the Brahma Kumaris emphasis on simple living and elevated thinking. The Sanskrit invocation “Om Dyauh Shaantih Antarikssam Shaantih Prthivii Shaantih” expresses the aspiration for peace and balance in the heavens, atmosphere and Earth.
India’s Cooling Challenge
For India, sustainable cooling has enormous developmental significance. Rapid urbanisation, rising temperatures, expanding healthcare infrastructure, growing food-storage requirements and increasing access to cooling technologies make the transition to efficient and climate-friendly cooling particularly important.
India’s response therefore needs an integrated approach involving policy, technological innovation, green buildings, skill development, sustainable refrigeration, renewable energy and public awareness.
Educational institutions can become laboratories of ecological citizenship. Universities can develop green campuses, schools can teach students about ozone and climate science, communities can promote energy-conscious lifestyles, and spiritual organisations can cultivate values that support sustainable behaviour.
The convergence of science, education, spirituality and public policy can transform environmental protection from a regulatory obligation into a civilisational ethic.
A Message for 2026
The most inspiring lesson of the ozone story is that humanity is capable of changing course. The Montreal Protocol demonstrates how science-based policy, international participation, compliance, financing and partnership can produce measurable environmental results.
The Kigali decade now asks humanity to extend that spirit into climate action. The question is no longer only how to preserve the ozone layer, but whether humanity can meet legitimate needs without destabilising the ecological systems upon which those needs depend.
World Ozone Day 2026 is therefore not merely a celebration of an environmental treaty. It is a call to planetary responsibility. The blue shield above us and the living Earth beneath us remind us that humanity exists within—not outside—the ecological web of life.
The Maha Upanishad expresses the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”—“The world is one family.” If the world is one family, then the atmosphere is our common home, the ozone layer our shared protective canopy, and climate stability our common inheritance.
Let us therefore cool not only our buildings, but also our ecological footprint; not only our technologies, but our desires; not only our planet, but our consciousness.
