The Meteorological Department’s advisory in the wake of the recent boat accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur to suspend Shikara rides in J&K due to ensuing inclement weather is a wise act to avoid any tragedy.

It is pertinent to mention that the MeT Department, in an advisory, has warned that weather across Jammu and Kashmir is expected to remain unsettled, with rain and gusty winds forecast till May 5 in various parts of the Union Territory.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has warned of possible hailstorms and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) at isolated places in central and north Kashmir as well as parts of Jammu division. Although the weather advisory was until May 4 evening, it is advisable that people should remain cautious during this time of the year as gale occurrences are common during the months of May and June in J&K, and it is necessary that all precautions should be taken without any exceptions especially during the boat rides as boat tragedies have become common these days with inclement weather remaining the main cause in majority of cases.

Taking the case of the Jabalpur boat tragedy, the safety protocols were not given priority leading to the deaths of several tourists. It is praiseworthy that the concerned quarters in J&K have taken the timely decision to suspend boat rides and asked the people to remain safe during the inclement weather conditions because venturing out during high velocity windstorms is not a wise decision and going for boating is simply out of the question.

The advisory for bad weather conditions stands up to May 6, 2026 and therefore the people should avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from water bodies, avoiding boating whether in Kashmir or Jammu as the mood of weather god is quite unpredictable these days and playing safe is the best option for one and all.

In addition, this advisory should serve as a wake-up call for both authorities and the public to institutionalize stricter safety mechanisms across all tourist and local boating operations. Regular inspection of boats, mandatory use of life jackets, real-time weather monitoring, and strict enforcement of operating guidelines must become non-negotiable norms rather than reactive measures taken only during emergencies. Equally important is public awareness, as individuals often underestimate the risks posed by sudden weather changes. A coordinated approach involving administration, service providers, and citizens can significantly reduce the chances of such mishaps and ensure that safety remains paramount, regardless of the season or circumstances.

As it has been witnessed that vagaries of weather have proven dangerous in the tragic Jabalpur boat accident, it is good that the authorities in J&K have acted proactively to protect people. Everyone should stay careful, avoid water activities, and skip unnecessary travel because staying safe is always better than taking risks.
