EVERY school on the Island is being offered a free water butt, while also receiving educational talks to help students learn about protecting resources.
After one of the driest Aprils on record for the Island, the initiative, from Jersey Water, was launched during Water Saving Week, which ran until last Friday, and is encouraging schools to collect rainwater for gardens instead of using tap water.
Staff from the organisation will be visiting schools to provide talks on why the Island is prone to drought and how to use water more efficiently.
The Water Quality team will also teach pupils how tap water is treated to ensure it is safe.
Mark Bowden, head of water resilience at Jersey Water, said: “Helping the Island to save water isn’t about one campaign or one day. It’s about building habits that last. Our water saving campaigns last year made a difference, with around 40% of our customers telling us they’ve changed the way they use water as a result.
“Working with schools is a positive step to reinforcing our messaging around using water wisely. We hope that by giving pupils practical tools and knowledge, we can help make water saving part of everyday life, both at school and at home.”
Over 15 schools have signed up to the initiative and any school is welcome to request a free water butt – large containers used to collect and store rainwater from roof downpipes for domestic garden use – by contacting Jersey Water.
