Pixel Watches are getting a trio of free proactive health tools

by · Android Police

Google is adding a bunch of new health-focused features to the Pixel Watch 5 starting this week.

Alongside the launch of the Google Pixel Watch 5, Google announced several new health features that it said would arrive "later this year." Now, it looks like that time has finally arrived, with the company starting to roll out some of the features announced as part of its new Health Guardian suite.

At the time, Google announced features including blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends, and sleep breathing quality metrics. The company has now confirmed that these features will start rolling out to Pixel Watch users this week.

Google says the new features will be available through the Google Health app, with users able to start setting them up this week. The first trend reports could begin appearing as early as October. Of course, since these features rely on tracking trends over time, they'll need some time to collect enough data before showing anything useful. How consistently you wear your smartwatch will also play a role.

And the features aren't exclusive to Google's latest smartwatch either. In addition to the Pixel Watch 5, Google is bringing them to the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4 as well.

Pixel Watch just gained blood pressure and insulin resistance trends

Google says Health Guardian works continuously in the background, looking for subtle changes in your health data over time. The suite also includes features like Breathing Emergency Detection for Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 users in Europe. This feature can automatically contact emergency services if the watch detects a severe drop in blood oxygen levels.

For now, though, Breathing Emergency Detection is limited to Europe. Google says the feature hasn't yet been cleared or evaluated by the FDA, so we'll have to wait and see if it eventually becomes available in the U.S.

Google also previously announced that some Health Guardian features would make their way to the Fitbit Air, and the company is sticking to that promise. However, insulin resistance trends and blood pressure trends on the Fitbit Air will require a Google Health Premium subscription and aren't arriving until later this year.

So, at least for now, Pixel Watch owners are getting first access to some of Google's most interesting new health tracking features.
