Marvel’s MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE Will Unleash Twisted Horror Versions of Spider-Man, X-Men, and Fantastic Four
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantMarvel Comics is taking a hard turn into horror this summer with the launch of its brand-new Midnight Universe, a darker publishing line that reimagines some of the company’s most iconic heroes as terrifying monsters.
The line was originally expected to spotlight supernatural characters like Blade and Werewolf by Night, but Marvel just revealed that the first wave of books will instead focus on corrupted versions of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four, and the concepts sound gloriously disturbing.
Launching this August, the Midnight Universe is being positioned as a major creator-driven imprint where writers and artists can completely cut loose with horror-inspired takes on classic Marvel mythology.
The new line kicks off with three titles: Midnight X-Men from Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte, Midnight Fantastic Four from Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker, and Midnight Spider-Man from Phillip Kennedy Johnson alongside Marvel newcomer Scie Tronc.
Marvel describes the Midnight Universe like this: “Dark. Unpredictable. Unmissable. The MIDNIGHT UNIVERSE draws in longtime fans and newcomers alike to enter a terrifying new world where anything can happen. Interconnected by rich lore-building, Marvel’s most definitive modern creators are given free rein to reimagine heroes with shocking twists and chilling transformations in boundary-less, creator-driven storytelling that will keep readers on edge issue after issue.
“The X-Men no longer fight for acceptance, they hunger for blood. The Fantastic Four venture into the unknown not to save the world—but to unleash terror upon it. And Spider-Man discovers that with great power... comes something monstrous.”
The setup for each title sounds like Marvel is going all-in on nightmare fuel. In Midnight X-Men, New York has become a battleground between vampires and mutant empires, with an uneasy peace threatening to collapse into full-scale war. Humanity is stuck right in the middle of it all.
Midnight Fantastic Four leans into cosmic horror as an obsessive scientist uncovers secrets of the universe humanity was probably better off never touching. The result leaves four people horribly transformed after venturing into terrifying new dimensions.
Then there’s Midnight Spider-Man, which sees Peter Parker mutated into a grotesque spider-human hybrid by Oscorp during experiments tied to immortality research. When the corporation starts creating additional human-animal monstrosities, Peter uses his horrifying new form to fight back.
Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski explained how this new universe fits into the publisher’s history of alternate continuities and reinventions:
"From the original New Universe to two Ultimate Universes, Marvel has a long history of creating and inspiring bold worlds filled with unforgettable characters and fresh ideas that feel new yet recognizable at the same time.
“With the new Midnight line, we’ve given some of our most outstanding creators the opportunity to delve into the darkest corners of their imaginations and birth some of the creepiest, most terrifying takes on the Marvel Universe you’ve ever seen."
Hickman also shared his excitement about diving back into mutant storytelling with a horror twist: "I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years. The conceit of Midnight X-Men aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I like to tell. It has a rich, open-ended mythology that equally mixes old and new ideas into something that feels both familiar and original."
Marvel also revealed that the books will feature special “Cloaked Covers,” where portions of the artwork remain hidden in shadow.
Readers will only fully see the cover art after opening the issue, adding another creepy layer to the whole experience. Outside of the debut issues, those hidden designs will reportedly stay obscured unless fans physically pick up the comics themselves.
This feels like Marvel taking a swing at building its own horror-heavy counterpart to DC’s Absolute Universe line, but with way more monsters, body horror, and nightmare imagery baked into the DNA of the stories.
Seeing characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men twisted into full horror mode sounds like a blast, especially with creators like Hickman, Percy, and Johnson steering the madness.
